Demographics of Chicago

Chicago is a major metropolitan area. Behind New York and LA, it is the largest city in the country. There are about 3 million people living in the city proper and about 10 million people living in the greater Chicago area. The actual city residents make up about a fifth of Illinois' total population. This also constitutes 1% to the nation's total population. There is reason to believe that these numbers might be slightly lower than the actual number of people living in Chicago.

The city is inhabited by people from all over the world. There are many ethnically dense neighborhoods as well as areas of extreme diversity. In addition, there are a number of colleges and universities in the area. This draws a wide variety of students to the city. Many remain in the city after they have finished their schooling. As the city becomes more densely populated, residents give up city life for the suburbs. The suburbs of Chicago are growing very rapidly.
